Dear Friends,
By the time you read this letter I will have completed another chapter in what I see as my “book of life”. As I put pen to paper I am conscious that two anniversaries are looming - on 18th February it will be 10yrs since my ‘ordination’ and ‘induction’ into what was then the ‘Deferred Linkage of Livingstone & Ardeer Churches’ - on 21st February 10yrs will have passed since I first preached as an ordained ‘Minister of word and Sacrament’.

Milestones like this, in our journey through life, invariably result on reflection of the past, and worry about what, if anything, has been achieved. One thing is certain - it is too late to alter the script even if my ministry in Stevenston over the last ten years is far from perfect.
It would be easy to fret deeply about the past but fretting about human failings is, in a sense, vanity. The psalmist pointed this out in the words, “When I consider the heavens - what is man?” [Psalm 8 : 3]. We are all but mere mortals – insignificant when compared to divine majesty. So my intention is not to dwell on the past but to ask the Lord to pardon the mistakes which mar the book of my time in this town.
Anniversaries open up future opportunities; the chance, by the grace of God, to go on hopefully - looking ever to Jesus.
With this thought in mind I realise that in the book of life there lies before me a clean sheet on which to write the next chapter and the sure hope that with Christ beside me the plot will turn out to be to the glory of God.
If you have any occasion to reflect on your own past life maybe the following words will help you to put it all into perspective. I came upon this quote in a book by Walter B. Knight,
“Remember all the happiness
That comes your way in living;
Forget each worry and distress,
Be hopeful and forgiving.
Remember good, remember truth,
Remember heaven’s above you,
And you will find through age and youth,
True joy and hearts to love you.”
I hope that you will all remember the good things from your life thus far and go on planning for tomorrow. They say that’s what keeps us young and for sure it makes me think I’m just a laddie.
With kind regards

Minister
